In children’s ministry, we try our best to plan great lessons that are fun and interactive and teach kids many REALLY important truths of the Bible. We tell them the Bible is 100% true, Jesus is God, people were created (didn’t evolve from apes), and that Jesus literally came back to life. We back ourselves up with verses from the Bible and repeat these truths over and over during their 12 years in our children’s ministries. But unfortunately we fail to answer a HUGE question…”WHY?”
When children enter middle school, more than likely they will have begun learning the polar opposite to everything they have been taught at church. And if that isn’t enough to confuse them, these opposite world-views are backed up with “facts” that answer the question that we many times fail to answer.
In order to combat this, children’s ministers must be diligent to provide as much proof as possible to show them what we are saying is, in fact, true- especially when the children are in the 5th and 6th grades. We know that sooner or later someone will try to teach our children that what we are telling them isn’t true. Instead of waiting for someone to tell them why evolution is true, let’s be proactive and tell them why it’s not. If we can beat them to the punch and prepare children for the day that they find out about the Big Bang, we will keep them grounded in their faith and help them not to have a crisis of world-view.
“…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)
