Stage Design Ideas

Over the past few months we have been working diligently to create a great environment on our stage that is not only conducive to learning but that also looks inviting and energetic. I thought I would share with you the elements of our stage design and how/where we got each piece so that maybe it can help you generate some ideas for your children’s ministry space.

Overall design:

Projector TV:

I previously wrote an article about how to make this stand-up TV. You can find that article here.

Fabric Circle Backdrop:

We went for a while without these circles and always felt as if something was missing from the stage but could never figure out what. I looked everywhere online for ideas for a backdrop or curtain and began exploring different types of stretchable materials. I finally found these circles at They were very easy to put together and hang, taking only about 30-45 minutes. Here are some closeup photos of them.

Couch and Coffee Table:

We wanted the couch to not only look good but to have a bright color to really give it some “pop.” We found what we were looking for at There were some alternatives that we could have used such as bright couch covers, but we found none that looked as good as this particular piece. The coffee table we also purchased at Nothing fancy to it, we just thought it helped complete that space.

Wall Lighting:

Corrugated metal sheets were hung on the wall and we purchased lights to reflect off of the metal behind the fabric circles. These lights can change color which can change the feel of the stage altogether. We went with 2 of the Chauvet COLORband Pix lights.

Colored Frames:

Another element we added to the room were colored frames. These can be found at Hobby Lobby (without the color). We bought cans of spray paint and painted them different colors then hung them to add some color while still allowing the room to feel open.

I would love to hear/see your ideas for decorating your children’s ministry space! Leave your thoughts, comments, and tips in the comment section below!

  1. Hey GJ,

I love what you’re doing with the space. The circles from Rosebrand and the frames definitely add energy and interest to the space. Love the orange couch and love IKEA (a lot of our home decorations have come from there :)

I am fascinated with the corrugated metal. I’ve seen it used a lot in youth ministry settings and think it looks fantastic with proper lighting, but it is something I’ve never used for our own set designs. Looking forward to seeing this set in person.

Corrugated plastic is something I’ve completely fell in love with for sets. It’s cheap and there are so many possibilities especially when you use the “clear” material. (See here: ) The columns are great but I especially like stacking different size cubes with LED to get a stack of glowing cubes. I’ve personally used the material to create Roman columns for our show and love them.

Great job GJ, and thanks for posting this!
